## Headline

Turquoise waters and white-sand beaches

A world of private islands and picture-perfect beaches. Whether combining the Maldives with a safari or escaping straight there for pure relaxation, the 26 coralline atolls that make up the country have everything you could ever dream of.

## The Maldives atolls and islands combine to create one of the most spectacular countries on earth.

Comprised of 26 beautiful atolls, the Maldives offers the ultimate desert island paradise with crystal clear turquoise waters, soft white sandy jungle-backed beaches, shallow lagoons, endless sunshine and access to some of the best coral reefs on the planet.

Accommodation in the Maldives comes in all shapes and sizes. The majority of resorts are limited to a single island in one of the atolls (larger clusters of islands). Given that you're essentially unable to leave the island, resorts tend to have everything you would ever need for a week of barefoot paradise.

## Country profile

With some islands tailored specifically for honeymooners and others for family breaks, there's a design for every traveller. We've handpicked the very best properties across the islands for all tastes - from rustic barefoot paradises, to high-tech gadget-filled villas.

Getting to one of the Maldives' incredible islands is via Malé International Airport. If you're staying at one of the resorts within the same atoll, it's normally possible to zip across the atoll in a speedboat. If you're further afield, you'll be treated to one of the most amazing seaplane journeys you could every dream of! Strap in for 30 mins of paradisiac, jaw-dropping scenery...

What we ended up with was very different to what we originally (and naively) requested... and we cannot thank Bonamy enough for doing so!

Good Time to Visit

## Time your visit with The Maldives' seasons

While the Maldives are hot and sunny all year round, the **best time to visit is between November and April**, outside of the annual southwest monsoon wet season (hulghangu). The drier northeast monsoon (iruvai) which is most prevalent in the northern atolls runs from December to April, making this the official 'high season', however, as it occurs during the dry season it rarely amounts to anything more than a quick downpour a couple of times a week

Typically for a tropical climate, **rain showers are short and heavy**. Even during dry season it's not uncommon to have a brief downpour before the skies clear again just as quickly.

## When to go

The **water temperature remains beautifully warm throughout the year**, and ranges between 25°C and 29°C - perfect for snorkelling, scuba diving and water sports.

The best time to travel for **crystal clear waters is between January and April each year**. Visibility is slightly reduced between April and November due to an increase of plankton in the water. This same period coincides with the best time to **dive with manta rays and whale sharks** that come to feed in the lagoons.

The peak **surfing season is between March and August**, with best waves around July/August - caused by storms in the Roaring Forties bringing big swells to the archipelago.

Lodges typically have **higher rates between November and April**, and over festive holidays.
