For a country that has suffered so much, the recent success of Rwanda is not just an example to the rest of Africa, but to the entire world. Not only is this the first African country to ban plastic bags, but it has also revolutionised the protection of its jungles and gorillas.

## Rwanda is so much more than just gorillas.

Rwanda is a small, landlocked country most notable for its mountain gorillas in the lush Volcanoes National Park, however there is so much more to see and explore. A surprisingly populous country, Rwanda is breathtakingly scenic and offers fantastic birding opportunities as well as more traditional savannah safaris in the Akagera national park that borders Tanzania to the east.

## Country profile

Volcanoes National Park in the north of Rwanda is one of the best places in the world to see mountain gorilla in their natural habitat. Home to around 250 gorilla in roughly 10 troops, 8 of which are habituated (approachable), organised treks to see them are extremely popular. With only 56 permits issued per day, it’s important to plan your visit well in advance.

With several huge peaks along the Albertine Rift in the north-west of the country, Rwanda boasts a number volcanic crater lakes set within beautiful rainforest. Fantastic hiking and birding is popular in the Nyungwe Forest where it is common to see chimpanzee plus owl-faced and colobus monkeys. A trip wouldn’t be complete without without visiting the beautiful shores of Lake Kivu further south.

With national parks easily accessible by road from the capital Kigali, a trip to Rwanda also offers the opportunity to learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating country.

## Time your visit with Rwanda's seasons

Dominated by tropical rainforest, Rwanda’s climate is fairly consistent all year round with high temperatures and high levels of rainfall. Whenever and wherever you visit, you can expect to receive a fair amount of sunshine. That said, you will almost inevitably encounter some rainfall too in the forest regions of Volcanoes and Nyungwe.

For a general rule though, Rwanda does follow the same typical weather patterns of East Africa with the two 'dry seasons' Dec-Feb and Jun-Oct and the two 'green seasons' Mar-May and November.

## When to go

Peak season is in August and between December and January. If you are planning a trip, it may be worth trying to avoid these periods if possible. Rainfall does rise slightly between March to May and October to November, although only marginally.
