Peace Parks Foundation: Saving Simalaha

Written by:

As human beings, we have a tendency to focus on negative news stories.

This feels particularly true when it comes to the African continent.

There are, however, a number of incredible organisations and communities doing phenomenal work across the board from human rights to wildlife conservation. The Peace Parks Foundation is just one of them.

Reintroducing wildlife to Simalaha - Peace Parks Foundation

Spanning over 444,000 square kilometres, an area larger than Germany, the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area is the largest area in the world that has been dedicated solely to conservation. Key to the success of this project has been reconnecting vital wildlife channels between national parks, thus allowing animals to re-establish their ancient migratory routes.

The final link in the chain is the Simalaha Community Conservancy - a stretch of land that connects Chobe National Park in Botswana to Kafue National Park in Zambia. The significance of this final link is vast as it now completes the uninterrupted protected expanse of nature between Angola, Botswana, NamibiaZambia and Zimbabwe

This addition to the larger Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area is thanks to the vision of Chief Sekute of the Kazungula district and Senior Chief Inyambo Yeta of the Sisheke district who have agreed to allow their land to be developed into a wildlife conservancy. Not only is wildlife now much safer, but the quality of life for those who live in the area has a chance to improve significantly.

You can find out more about the project in the video below:
