A trip to South Africa wouldn’t be complete without sampling some of the world-class wines that are produced around the Western Cape.

With some estates situated just 30 minutes from central Cape Town, you don’t have to venture far to find yourself sipping pinot noir while watching the sun set over the vines. Many of the estates also now boast fantastic accommodation and fine dining experiences – making your visit even more worthwhile.

We’ve listed our Top 5 vineyards to visit in 2018 below:

Constantia Glen

Cape Town | www.constantiaglen.com

Constantia Glen

With spectacular views overlooking Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine producing region, Constantia Glen is nestled alongside Table Mountain in the heart of Cape Town itself.

Almost destroyed by wildfire in 1999, the vineyard has emerged back onto the wine scene like a phoenix from the ashes – with help from wine maker Justin van Wyk.

Known for exceptional cool climate Bordeaux-style red and white wines, Constantia Glen also now has a fine restaurant specialising in charcuterie and cheese platters.

Where to stay: Cape Cadogan

Our favourite wine: Constantia Glen Five 2012

La Petite Ferme

Franschhoek | www.lapetiteferme.co.za

La Petite Ferme

Not just a world-class winery, La Petite Ferme offers luxury accommodation in the form of its Manor House and Vineyard Suites, each with spectacular views over Franschhoek, coupled with one of the best restaurants in South Africa delivering award-winning cuisine.

The Franschhoek terroir is well known for producing world-class grapes, and La Petite Ferme is no exception. With a full range of wines available, you’re certain to find something memorable here.

Our favourite wine: Verdict 2015

Delaire Graff

Stellenbosch | www.delaire.co.za

Delaire Graff

The Delaire Graff estate has redefined luxury in Stellenbosch, if not the whole of South Africa. Boasting ten lodges that overlook the valley, stunning views of the wine estate, botanical gardens as well as a spa, Delaire Graff has something for everyone.

Head chef Christian Campbell’s on-site restaurant is recognised as one of the finest in the region and is reason enough for a visit. Having achieved ‘First Growth’ status in South Africa, this vineyard offers a full range of wines to suit all palates.

Where to stay: Delaire Graff

Our favourite wine: Cabernet Franc Rosé 2017

Springfield Estate

Robertson | www.springfieldestate.com

Springfield Estate

The Springfield Estate, one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa, was established by French settlers from the Loire who were said to arrive with bundles of vines under their arms.

Set in the Robertson Valley, the estate is still run by the same descendants whose philosophy is to produce wine as naturally as possible. Techniques such as using natural wild yeasts from grape skins are still employed today - a high-risk strategy that has undoubtedly led to many headaches over the years. The result however is a true, honest wine in which you can taste the family motto: Made on Honour.

If you make it down to Springfield Estate, make sure you wander down to the jetty with Felix the dog.

Where to stay: Galenia (Olive oil tasting here is also fantastic)

Our favourite wine: Wild Yeast Chardonnay 2017

Waterford Estate

Stellenbosch | www.waterfordestate.co.za

Waterford Estate

This stunning 120-hectare farm is famous for its outstanding chardonnays, chocolate pairing and wine safari. Yes, you read that right. This unique 3 hour tour around the estate in a safari-type vehicle is a fantastic way to get up close to the vines and offers a chance to speak in depth to the makers. You might even be lucky enough to spot some wildlife such as small antelope and unique birds such as the Cape eagle owl.

The estate is refreshingly unpretentious and the staff are very knowledgeable - clearly passionate about what they do. Just be warned there is no restaurant on site. Unless you want to fill up on chocolates that is...

Where to stay: Cles des Montagnes

Our favourite wine: Methode Cap Classique
