Spellbound São Tomé and Pristine Príncipe

Reconnect with nature in the 'Galapagos of Africa'

The tiny west African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe ensnares the visitor, both with its unspoilt natural beauty and with the heavy memories of its colonial past.

This 10-night itinerary explores the very best of these two islands. You'll stay for one night in the country's tiny capital, before flying over to the tiny island Príncipe to spend time in a beautifully converted cacao plantation, at a stunning beach resort, and finally at a breathtaking beach lodge.

The quality of the activities, many of which spend time exploring this small country's phenomenal natural wonders, are only complimented by the warm loving hospitality of the local population.

Arrival

São Tomé

Stepping off your international flight in the tiny island of São Tomé is akin to stepping back in time.

You wont find a taxi rank outside the 'terminal', only friends of passengers waiting for them to jump in the back of their pick-up to sit alongside chickens and fresh local produce.

This is a world where time moves at a different pace. This is a world you'll become a part of, and will have to tear yourself away from after 10 short nights.

Days 1 - 2

São Tomé

You won't be jumping into the back of that pick-up (quite yet anyway!). Your driver will meet you as you collect your luggage and will whisk you away to the fabulous Omali Lodge just a few minutes away for your first night.

While away your afternoon relaxing at the lodge, or head into town to explore the local streets, cafes, beaches and bars before you hop across to the impossibly serene island of Príncipe the next morning.

Days 2-5

Principe

Just a 35 minute flight north-east lies the almost otherworldly Príncipe island. Peering out of your window, you would be forgiven to expect to see pterodactyls ducking and diving alongside the aeroplane.

You'll once again be met by a beaming smile and transferred through tiny villages to your first beach destination of your holiday - Bom Bom Resort.

During your stay

Bom Bom is perfectly located right on two beaches, with grounds full of palm trees, clear waters to swim in, and a lovely restaurant on a tiny islet accessed by a wooden walkway over the sea.

You'll be staying in one of the stunning Beach Bungalows nestled under palms that overlook the beach. You will be immediately struck by just how quiet and peaceful the island is - there's no industry, no motorways, just pure bliss.

Spend your days here exploring the deserted beaches, going for hikes through the forest, fishing with the locals, or simply forgetting about time itself.

Days 5-8

Principe

After three days of snorkelling in the sea and exploring the coastal treasure troves at Bom Bom, you'll head up to Roca Sundy for your next three nights. Choose to get transferred up to the lodge, or have someone take your bags while you hike up through the jungle.

Arriving at Roca Sundy you may be surprised to learn that the lodge was once a cacao plantation from the bygone era when the islands were under Portuguese rule. The plantation has since been lovingly restored and converted into the buildings you see today - your home for the next three nights.

During your stay

This truly unique hotel is rich in history and authenticity. It is in fact where Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity was proven by Sir Arthur Eddington in 1919! Not only that, the plantation is still used by the local community that lives, works and goes to school in the surrounding area.

The character and original features of the property have been retained and it’s a pleasant contrast from staying at Bom Bom on the beach. If you’re into history, meeting fascinating people, exploring beautiful jungles and like feeling like you’ve stepped back in time, then this will be an absolutely perfect spot for you.

Days 8-11

Principe

Now, after almost a week on this tiny island, you will no doubt have made some friends yourselves and will have a few of your own local stories to tell! You'll take all of your experience and knowledge back down to the beach for your final few nights at the stunning Sundy Praia.

This lodge really does have the wow factor. It epitomises the saying 'saving the best until last'!

During your stay

Set on an impossibly beautiful beach with jungle sweeping right down the water's edge, there is a reason this lodge is one of National Geographic's 'Lodges of the World'.

Here, the quality of the food, service, accommodation, everything is as good as you'll find anywhere on the planet. Still retaining all of it's charm and soul, but with a modern twist, the resort is the perfect location to give your magical stay a fitting finale.

Day 11

Departure

You'll have had plenty of time to explore the majority of the island. Hiking up to waterfalls, circling the island by sea, seeing turtles and hearing as many of the local stories as you possibly can.

Sadly, all good things must come to an end and you will need to leave this beautiful island at some point. When you are ready to do so (we do know that many guests try to rearrange their flights to stay longer!), you'll jump back on the short flight to São Tomé for your journey back home.
