Rwanda, the land of a thousand hills, is a stunning country that offers far more than gorilla trekking.

Whilst spending time with these magnificent apes is, of course, an amazing highlight of any trip to this Rwanda, there are other incredible regions that must be visited and explored.

From the moving yet vibrant capital Kigali, to the lions and leopards of Akagera; past the pre-historic afro-montane forests of Nyungwe and up to the volcanoes of the Virungas. This itinerary offers a complete high-end Rwandan experience.

Days 1 - 3

Kigali

No journey through Rwanda is complete without spending at least one night exploring the vibrant city of Kigali.

The Retreat by Heaven is our favourite 'boutique' hotel in Kigali. Its setting looking out over the sprawling city is truly spectacular! We recommend two nights here to get to know the city, and to also relax into your holiday.

During your stay

Anyone travelling to Rwanda needs to be aware of the country's tragic recent history. A visit to the Genocide museum is incredibly moving and upsetting, but vital to understanding the phenomenal recovery of its people.

After visiting the museum, you can take a bit of time to explore the vibrant markets and the city as a whole. Kigali is unlike any other African city.

DAYS 3 - 6

Akagera National Park

A three scenic hour drive from Kigali takes you east through the rolling hills to Akagera National Park.

Akagera National Park, is one of Africa's most recent conservation success stories. A park where, until recently, you would struggle to see much game, is now home to the Big 5 plus so much more.

Wilderness' Magashi Camp, set on one of the park's many lakes in the north of the park, is as exclusive in its remoteness as its luxury.

During your stay

Explore the northern regions of Akagera on daily game drives, as well as heading out on boating safaris to witness the park's breathtaking birdlife.

We recommend three nights here to give you the best chance of exploring the diversity of habitat and wildlife the area has to offer.

DAYS 6 - 8

Nyungwe Forest

On this day you will be transferred back to Kigali before taking a helicopter flight down to the 'source' of the Nile and the primeval Nyungwe Forest. The flight alone will be an incredible highlight of your holiday, and gives you the opportunity to understand the abundance of the mountains and forests.

One & Only Nyungwe House offer the only luxurious lodge in the forest. It is a perfect base for some great relaxation and to explore the forest.

During your stay

Chimp trekking through the canopy of the forest is unlike anywhere else in Africa. The chimpanzees in this area are slowly becoming habituated, which greatly increases your chances of seeing them.

You can also cycle through surrounding hills, or just enjoy the incredible views.

DAYS 8 - 11

Volcanoes National Park

The beautiful drive past Lake Kivu will take you to the stunning Volcanoes National Park - home of the Mountain Gorillas.

Bisate Lodge itself is one of the most beautiful safari lodges in East Africa. Built to resemble a gorilla nest, the lodge is great fun and luxurious too.

During your stay

While two nights in this area would be sufficient, we always prefer to suggest three nights. This allows you the luxury of hiking up to the gorillas twice. Three nights also gives you more time to explore the beautiful surrounding volcanoes and mountains as well as engaging with the local people and their culture.

Departure

After your final night you will be transferred back to Kigali for your flight home, or onto your next destination.
