Ruaha National Park | Tanzania

Ikuka Safari Camp

Ikuka Safari Camp is a new safari camp in Ruaha National Park that is quite noteworthy due to its spectacular location atop the Mwagusi Escarpment in southern Tanzania, it is also owner run and managed. The site allows for expansive and breathtaking views that are unparalleled by other accommodations in the area.

The views are perfectly complemented by an intimate and personalised and experienced that can only be found in smaller accommodations in the African bush country.

The six guest bandas on the property are designed to blend in with the surroundings and give guests the utmost experience of being connected with nature by way of stone, thatch and natural wood construction. Awaken in the morning to the calls of nature from the comfort of a large, cosy bed. When you are ready to start the day’s adventure, freshen up in the en-suite bathroom that offers a large stone vanity with two vessel sinks, shower, and toilet. You can then curl up with a cup of coffee or tea on your private elevated wood deck that surrounds the entire banda or in the relaxing sitting area, both of which provide breathtaking views of the Ruaha’s wilderness reserve.

Time your visit with Tanzania's seasons

Tanzania is another country that is fantastic to visit year round, with every month offering something unique, however certain areas do become harder to access at certain times of year. As a general rule, Tanzania follows a typical East African climate, with the two 'dry seasons' and two 'green seasons'. A quick overview would look like this. Dry: June-October & December-February. Green: March-May & November.

The Great Wildebeest and Zebra Migration is constantly moving through the Serengeti so no matter when you visit, if you are hoping to see the migration you'll be in luck.

From March through to the end of May the 'long-rains' fall across Tanzania, while in November the 'short-rains' arrive. While on the outlook this seems rather daunting, many camps remain open during these months and visitors are rewarded for their bravery. Although you can be unlucky and be rained on a couple of days in a row, the typical weather pattern is for big storm clouds to build up during the day (a spectacular sight) which then breaks in a torrential downpour over the course of about half an hour. The sun then comes back out and dries everything out within moments. The Ruaha in the south is a notable exception where the dry season tends to start a little earlier towards April.

From June to late October the skies clear and there are glorious long days of dry weather. These are typically the busiest months in Tanzania as a result of the migration heading into full swing. Rates are often a lot higher during these months and availability for space can be tough to come by.

In January and February the skies are clear again after the 'short-rains'. This is a great season to go if you are keen to avoid busy National Parks and beaches.
