Best Areas to Stay in Mauritius
Every region is completely different and equally worth visiting if time allows. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the best areas to visit in Mauritius so you can choose the perfect area for your stay.
The North
Grand Baie
Grand Baie, located on the north coast, is the island's main tourist hub. This vibrant area boasts picturesque beaches with crystal-clear waters, magnificent sunsets, a vast array of restaurants, designer boutiques, lively bars, and an electric nightlife. It’s a great choice if you’re someone who likes everything at your fingertips, whether that’s a sunset cocktail or some late-night shopping, Grand Baie won’t disappoint.
The West
Flic en Flac & Black River
The west side of Mauritius offers a great blend of stunning beaches, lush mountains, and the Black River Gorges National Park. Flic en Flac Beach is a highlight here - its long stretches of powdery sand and turquoise waters make it an ideal swimming and snorkelling spot.
Nature enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them entertained in this part of the island, from snorkelling, scuba diving and swimming with dolphins, to exploring the national park, hiking, and chasing waterfalls. The West is also known for its beautiful sunsets and a more laid-back vibe compared to up north. If you’re after an ‘everything at your own pace’ kind of holiday, you’ll feel right at home here.
The East
Belle Mare
The east coast of Mauritius is known for its raw, natural beauty and tranquillity. Belle Mare offers pristine beaches and a refreshing breeze all year round, thanks to the trade winds. However, it’s best to avoid July and August when winds are strongest. This region is home to many local villages and the incredible Île aux Cerfs, a small island just off the mainland known for its gorgeous beaches and golf course (more on that below).
The East is for those who want to escape the crowds – it’s the kind of place where you’ll have stretches of beach almost to yourself, with only the sounds of waves for company.
The South
Le Morne
If you’ve ever done a Google image search of Mauritius, you’ve probably seen the iconic Le Morne Brabant mountain. This area is a UNESCO World Heritage site, also boasting white sandy beaches and the mesmerising ‘underwater waterfall’ (optical illusion).
The trade winds make it a haven for kitesurfers. Le Morne offers a more secluded and peaceful environment, ideal for escaping the hustle and bustle. The landscapes in this area feel a bit like you’ve stumbled onto the set of a nature documentary - it’s unbelievably stunning and untouched.
