Our Top 5 Mobile Camps to Experience the Great Migration

3 min read

It's a common misconception that the Great Migration only happens during a few months of the year.

The wildebeest and zebra are in fact always on the move.

Just like the animals, many of the camps in Tanzania's world-famous Serengeti National Park move around this vast wilderness following the herds on their never-ending journey in search of fresh pasture.

These camps are known as 'Mobile Camps'. They're typically slightly more rustic and simple than their permanent counterparts, but this only adds to their charm.

Being mobile, these camps can be packed up in an afternoon and leave no lasting impact on the environment. What they might lack in facilities, they more than make up for with experience!

These are are Top 5 Migration Mobile Camps:

The Great Migration - Legendary Serengeti Camp

Serengeti Safari Camp

This first camp is one of our favourites across all of Africa. Run by Nomad Tanzania, the camp exudes rustic charm and simple elegance.

Like all of the camps here, it moves every few months to ensure that it is in the absolute best location to see the migration in full swing.

Olakira Migration Camp

Olakira is an exquisitely designed and thought-out camp with everything you need, and nothing you don't.

The feature we love most about this camp is their 'stargazing' tents where, if you're feeling especially brave, you can sleep under the stars as the wildlife wanders by.

Their phenomenal Mobile Serengeti Camp are fantastically placed to have front-row seats to the annual procession. Enjoy a gin and tonic by the camp fire as you listen to the sounds of nature around you.

This intimate and elegantly furnished camp moves twice yearly to position itself for the migration. The tented main dining area is vast and commands panoramic views over the beautiful surroundings.

Each of the tents boasts a private deck - the perfect place to sit and admire the wold after a day on safari.

Alex Walker Serengeti Mobile

The Alex Walker mobile camps are some of the finest in all of Africa. They are the most original back-to-basic but comfortable camps - the only WiFi you'll find here is Alex's Ridgeback!

The Lamai location of their Serengeti Mobile camp is perfectly positioned to spectate the wildebeest river crossings. Away from the river, this area of rolling savannah, boulder-strewn hillsides and fig-tree groves, is littered with inconceivably enormous herds of wildebeest, topi and zebra.
